Balancing carbs, protein, and sugar can be tough, especially if you’re unfamiliar of the nutrient content in various foods; however, a proper balance, typically called the golden ratio is crucial if you want to make the most of whatever you love. Your body needs all kinds of things to function properly, and it’s no secret that carbs and protein are high on the list. The sugar, however, might throw you for a loop- but it’s important too! What’s a Golden Ratio?
The quick and dirty of it is, a golden ratio is any situation where the parts, when balanced correctly, correspond to make a whole that is also correctly balanced. Confused? No problem. Your golden ratio basically means that you get the adequate nutrients your body needs to function at it’s highest capacity, without any leftovers. That’s when you’ll be at your peak. This means balancing your carbs, protein and sugar accordingly based on caloric intake.

The first thing you’ll have to do to find that golden ratio is determine your daily caloric needs. If you’re pushing to lose weight, an athlete trying to improve your performance, a bodybuilder looking to pack on some muscle, or even just trying to stay right where you’re at, your caloric intake will vary.
You need to nail that sucker down and then divide those calories accordingly. Ultimately, you’ll want an absolute bare minimum of 35 percent of your calories to be carbs (but closer to 45-50 percent), 20 percent sugars, and anywhere from 10 to 35 percent of calories from proteins. There’s somewhat of a margin for both the protein and the carbs- every body is different, so tweak the amounts a bit and see what provides the best results.
You Are What You Eat
Yeah, yeah, I’m sure you’ve heard that before. Well it’s true! Knowing the quantity of nutrients you need is not enough; make sure you consider the source! Stay away from super processed stuff and opt in favor of natural foods without any added extras. Higher quality calories will help you perform better. Anything that is not supposed to be in the food or beverages you consume will have to be filtered and eliminated. That takes energy away from the body’s core functions and can put a toll on the organs (like liver and kidney).
The all natural, all organic food route may not always be an option for you, but at least pick non-GMO products, steer clear of prepared food and when in doubt, read labels carefully.
